How do you describe someone in just three words?

Three is the hardest number — long enough to be true, short enough that every word has to earn its place. The trick is not to pick your three favourite adjectives. It's to pick one from three different drawers:

• One for what they're like — the trait anyone who meets them notices in the first ten minutes. Funny. Steady. Curious.
• One for what they do — the thing they reliably show up and do for people, whether or not anyone thanks them. Shows-up. Fixes-things. Listens.
• One only you would say — the private, specific one. The nickname, the running joke, the thing they'd be embarrassed you noticed. This is the word they'll remember.

Skip the words that describe everyone — nice, good, great. If the word could apply to half the people you know, it isn't telling them anything. And don't reach for the thesaurus: magnanimous lands worse than generous if generous is what you actually mean. Stuck on yourself rather than someone else?
